GUWAHATI: Gunmen shot dead two tribal village defence volunteers in Manipur on Saturday amid heightened security for the April 19 and 26 elections in the state's two LS seats.
The shooting at Phailengmola, bordering Kangpokpi and Imphal East districts, happened ahead of home minister Amit Shah's scheduled rally at Hapta Kangjeibung in Imphal East on Monday. The two slain village volunteers are yet to be identified.
This follows a civilian suffering a gunshot wound during a clash between armed village volunteers and gunmen near Heirok village in Thoubal district on Friday. The clash occurred when the intruders attacked the village, prompting the volunteers to retaliate. The gunfight lasted an hour.
Earlier, miscreants set fire to a saw mill near Pallel in Kakching district, 50km from Imphal, on Thursday, triggering security concerns before polls. Around 50 people were rounded up for questioning and five suspects were arrested later, police said.
