AGARTALA: Following an urgent request from the Union home ministry on Saturday, the state home department assigned another battalion of Tripura State Rifles (TSR) led by 11th battalion commandant Pradip De to leave for West Bengal on Monday for the upcoming panchayat polls in that state.
State home department officials on Sunday said six companies of TSR personnel led by 10th battalion commandant Prabir Majumder left for West Bengal on Sunday morning to provide security during the panchayat election to be held on July 15, 19 and 22.
They added that the state government on Saturday received an urgent communiqué from the Union home ministry asking to release another six companies (a battalion) by the next 48 hours for the West Bengal polls till the last phase on July 25.
The TSR will be deployed in East Midnapore, Hooghly and Burdwan on July 15, Howrah, South and North 24 Parganas on July 19, Nadia, Murshidabad, Malda and Birbhum on July 22 and Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur on July 25.
Earlier, TSR jawans were sent to Bihar, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand during the assembly elections, besides the Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi in 2010.
