Guwahati: AIUDF MLA Rafiqul Islam on Wednesday alleged that neither BJP, Congress, nor AGP wants to discuss the killings that occurred during the anti-foreigner movement in Assam in 1983. He demanded a CBI probe into the incident based on the Tewary Commission’s findings.
Speaking to reporters outside the state assembly, the MLA said, “Thousands of innocent people were killed in the violence of 1983 in the state. The report was laid in the house by then chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta but was never made public. Now, the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led govt has released it after four decades.”
He further alleged that no previous govt took any action on the matter.
The MLA demanded that the current govt should order a CBI probe into the incident based on the Tewary Commission’s findings. “Otherwise, simply making the report public will not serve any purpose,” he added.
