After two years of ethnic strife, 257 internally displaced people return home in Manipur
Imphal: In the heart of Manipur, a poignant chapter unfolded Thursday as 257 internally displaced persons (IDPs) from 64 households finally made their way back to the embrace of their long-lost homes in Bishnupur district.
This moment, marked by both relief and anticipation, is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of hope in the face of adversity.
For more than two years, these families have been living in the shadows of uncertainty, their lives uprooted by violence and unrest. The Leimaram High School relief camp had become a temporary refuge, a place where dreams of returning home were nurtured amidst the harsh realities of displacement.
But today, as deputy commissioner Pooja Elangbam flagged off their journey back to Leimaram Waroiching, a new dawn broke.
The air was thick with emotion as families, clutching their belongings and memories, stepped onto the path of resettlement. It's a path paved with the promise of rebuilding not just homes, but lives.
With funds already disbursed to aid in the reconstruction of their abandoned houses, the assurance of continued support through direct benefit transfers added a layer of security to their hopeful return.
As the convoy of hope made its way to Waroiching, led by SP Th. Shangkar Deba and his security team, the significance of this moment is not lost on anyone.
“It's a collective sigh of relief, a step towards healing the wounds of the past. The phased return of IDPs, following careful assessments of improved conditions, signals a turning point in the journey towards peace and normalcy. Yet, this is just the beginning. The road ahead is long, and the challenges of rebuilding a community are many,” said an officer.
But with the support of the government and the determination of the people, there is a renewed sense of optimism. The promise to close all relief camps by the end of the year stands as a beacon of hope, a reminder that brighter days are within reach. As the families settle back into their homes, they carry with them the strength of their shared experiences and the hope for a future with peace reigning supreme.
This moment, etched in the annals of Manipur's history, is a testament to the enduring spirit of its people and their unyielding quest for a better tomorrow.
Protests by IDPs and civil bodies demanding immediate resettlement to their original homes had intensified over the past two weeks, with the IDPs even boycotting the recently concluded Sangai Festival with the support of civil bodies.
DC Pooja Elangbam said the day marks a significant moment, as many IDPs can now return home. “The IDPs returning home signifies a positive step towards building a better and peaceful society,” she said.
