After Lok Sabha win, parents meet Amritpal Singh at Assam's Dibrugarh Central Jail, mother hands out sweets in prison

DIBRUGARH/AMRITSAR: Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh, elected MP from Khadoor Sahib while being jailed in Assam's Dibrugarh prison under NSA, met his parents on Saturday and asked them to express his gratitude to the "sangat" (community) on his behalf and continue to engage with them until his return from jail.

When they visited Dibrugarh Central Jail during the day, Amritpal's parents Tarsem Singh and Balwinder Kaur distributed homemade sweets to guards and prison staff to celebrate his stunning win in Lok Sabha elections. They were received at the airport by Amritpal's wife, Kirandeep, who has been in Dibrugarh since June 5. Balwinder Kaur also brought a new set of clothes and shoes for her son to wear during the oath-taking ceremony in Parliament.


Amritpal has been lodged in the high-security prison since his arrest on April 23, 2023, under the National Security Act (NSA). Despite his incarceration, he managed pull off a landslide victory from the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat, beating Congress's Kulbir Singh Zira by 1,97,120 votes.


Speaking to reporters outside the jail, Amritpal's father said they owed Amritpal's victory to the immense love and support he received from people back home. "From youngsters to elders, everyone loves him," said Tarsem Singh.

According to legal experts, despite his imprisonment, Amritpal has the constitutional right to be sworn in as an MP. However, he will not be able to attend the proceedings in Lok Sabha and will have to return to jail after the oath-taking ceremony.



Balwinder said Amritpal and his nine incarcerated associates had been in "chardi kalan" ( high spirits).

She added they were consulting Amritpal's legal team about the process for his taking oath as MP. Amritpal's uncle Sukhchain Singh said they were also looking to seek parole for Amritpal.
