4 inmates flee Sadiya dist jail by scaling wall with makeshift rope
Dibrugarh: Four prisoners lodged at Sadiya district jail in Tinsukia escaped from custody on Wednesday morning in a daring jailbreak, raising questions about security protocols at the facility.
The four prisoners identified as Nabin Buragohain, Amlanjyoti Chetia, Sasadhar Deori and Huntu Sonowal escaped by scaling the tall wall of the jail in the Chapakhowa area of Sadiya. The inmates reportedly fashioned a makeshift rope by tying clothes together and used it to climb over the fortified wall and flee.
The incident has caused a sensation in the area, with many questioning how such a breach could occur in what is supposed to be a highly fortified jail facility. The escape has prompted concerns about potential security lapses and inadequate surveillance at the facility.
Confirming the incident, Sadiya senior superintendent of police (SSP) Jagadish Das said, “I was informed about the incident by the jailer that four prisoners have escaped. An investigation has been launched and an operation is underway to catch the four of them.” He added that police are treating the matter with utmost seriousness, deploying resources to track down the escapees and examine the circumstances that enabled the jailbreak. He appealed to the public to provide any information regarding their whereabouts.
Sources suggest that the escape was likely planned over several days, with the prisoners collecting and preparing clothing items to construct the rope used in their escape. The fact that they executed the plan without detection has raised questions about night-time surveillance and guard deployment at the jail.
Authorities have launched a manhunt involving multiple police teams conducting raids at possible hideouts and checking movement in surrounding areas. Police have set up checkpoints at strategic locations, including the nearby Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, to prevent the escapees from fleeing to other regions. The Tinsukia district administration has ordered a probe into the security breach. Senior officials are expected to visit the jail to assess the existing security measures and recommend improvements to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
