Silchar: A 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck areas around Silchar in Cachar district on Sunday morning, triggering brief panic among residents. The tremor was felt at 9:21am, according to initial reports.
The epicentre of the quake was located at Irongmara, around 19km from Silchar town. Officials said the earthquake originated at a shallow depth of approximately 5km below the surface, making the tremors more strongly felt in areas close to the epicentre.
Experts said shallow earthquakes tend to cause sharper surface-level shaking compared to deeper ones of similar magnitude. Residents in and around the epicentral zone reported noticeable vibrations, though no major damage or casualty has been reported so far. Authorities are monitoring the situation.
