2 semiconductor chips made in Assam make debut at PM-unveiled nat’l event
Guwahati: Assam proudly entered India's high-tech semiconductor landscape at Semicon India 2025 with the display of two pioneering ‘Made in India' chips — the Tata OSAT Chip from Jagiroad and the Neural Amplifier Frontend IC from NIT Silchar.
These two pioneering chips from Assam were showcased at India's premier conference for the nation's semiconductor ecosystem in Noida, which was opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.
"The day is not far when the smallest chip made in India will drive the biggest change in the world," Modi said at the inauguration
This milestone signals a breakthrough for the northeast in contributing to India's quest for semiconductor self-reliance and technological innovation.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on X, "The first Made in India Chips displayed at the #SemiconIndia2025 and proudly taking its place are two chips from Assam- the Tata OSAT Chip and the Neural Amplifier Frontend IC from NIT Silchar! Assam is moving steadily to ensure that it fuels India's semiconductor journey."
The Tata OSAT Chip, developed at Tata Electronics' state-of-the-art assembly and test facility at Jagiroad in the state, performs critical packaging, reliability testing, and optimisation of semiconductor chips. Expected to produce millions of chips daily, the facility places the state at the heart of India's semiconductor supply chain.
NIT Silchar's Neural Amplifier Frontend IC is a cutting-edge chip designed to amplify delicate neural signals with high precision and low noise, enabling advancements in brain-computer interfaces and healthcare technology. Developed with state-of-the-art semiconductor design techniques, the IC reflects Assam's growing role in frontier engineering research.
Experts say these achievements have major implications: from generating thousands of skilled jobs and attracting high-tech investments, to positioning Assam as a strategic node in India's semiconductor ambitions. This also opens new pathways in medical technology and advanced electronics. The govt's focus on Semicon India 2025 aligns with Assam's transformation from an agrarian economy to a technological hub.
As the nation pushes to reduce import dependency and boost domestic manufacturing, Assam's semiconductor success uplifts the northeast's economic future and inspires national confidence in India's high-tech prowess, experts added.
