Arunachal Pradesh: Tourist dies, 1 missing as ice cracks on frozen Sela Lake; search operations underway
GUWAHATI: One tourist died and another reportedly went missing after falling into the frozen Sela Lake in Arunachal Pradesh on Friday, when the ice cracked under their weight at an altitude of nearly 13,700ft.
The incident occurred when a member of a seven‑tourist group ventured towards the centre of the frozen lake to position his camera. The ice gave way, plunging him into the water. His two companions attempted a desperate rescue but were also submerged.
A specialised rescue team from the Army’s Gajraj Corps was rushed to the site following an alert.
Braving sub‑zero temperatures and harsh high‑altitude conditions, Army divers — assisted by police and the local civil administration — managed to pull out two of the three persons. One was successfully revived with immediate medical aid, while the other was declared dead, defence PRO Lt Col M Rawat said.
Search operations are continuing for the third missing tourist, the PRO said. The group is reportedly from Kerala.
The remaining members have been safely sheltered at nearby Army camps and are receiving necessary care.
Reiterating its commitment to humanitarian assistance, the Indian Army urged visitors to strictly follow safety advisories issued by the civil administration, especially in high‑altitude areas prone to extreme weather.
“The Army remains dedicated to timely rescue and assistance operations in the region,” the PRO said.
