GURGAON: The district administration will organise a workshop for domestic staffers next week for awareness about sexual harassment at workplace and seeking help in such cases. The step is being taken after a group of domestic staffers in DLF 5 and Sector 43 wrote to the administration last month about the need to educate them on the matter.

According to officials, the workshop will be organised on Domestic Workers Day on June 16. “All the RWAs have been requested to provide space for the workshop in their respective societies,” Nishant Yadav, deputy commissioner, said.

Soniya, one of the women who wrote to the administration, said, “We mostly work at unfamiliar places. Therefore, there is a need for awareness about sexual harassment.”

Preeti, another domestic staff, claimed they are often at the receiving end of sexual abuse. This is further aggravated by their migrant status, due to which they lack the necessary community support in a situation of duress, she said. “They are often illiterate and unaware of the law, and the impending threat of loss of employment and stigma associated with the violence deters them from reporting to police,” she said.
