Gurgaon: A 42-year-old woman died after being hit by a speeding canter near the TCI Chowk flyover in Farrukhnagar area on Saturday.The victim, Uma Devi, a native of Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district, was living in rented accommodation in Khawaspur village and worked as a labourer at a cold chain company on Pataudi Road.Based on the complaint of her brother-in-law, a case was registered at Farrukhnagar police station against an unidentified driver.In a complaint submitted to the police, Vimlesh Kumar, the deceased’s brother-in-law, stated that he received a phone call informing him that Uma Devi met with an accident below the TCI Chowk flyover. “He rushed to the spot and learnt that an unidentified canter driver, driving at high speed, hit her around 5.30 pm before fleeing from the scene with the vehicle,” an officer said.It added that the woman was returning home after work and the incident occurred while she was crossing the road. The canter hit her and threw her onto the road, leading to serious injuries to her.Uma Devi was taken to the govt hospital in Sector 10, Gurgaon, where doctors declared her dead.Based on the complaint and hospital documents, a case was registered under Sections 106 (death by negligence) and 281 (rash driving) of the BNS against an unknown driver.An officer privy to the investigation said, “We have launched an investigation. Teams are checking the CCTV footage from the area to ascertain the details of the canter. We will soon nab the truck driver and proceed with legal action against him.”
