Waste mounds block Gurgaon underpass, width of service road shrinks

Gurgaon: An underpass at Islampur on Sohna Road has turned into an unauthorised dumping ground, leaving commuters struggling with foul smell and piles of garbage along the stretch. This low-height vehicular underpass was meant to help local traffic cross from one side of the corridor to another. However, regular dumping of household rubbish along the stretch has made commute difficult.Waste is frequently dumped near the entry and exit points, resulting in piles of rubbish accumulating. Stray cattle and dogs are often seen scavenging through the waste and scattering it further.
Residents alleged that there has been little visible enforcement to deter violators. They have demanded regular monitoring, immediate clearance of waste and strict penalties to prevent dumping."The underpass has become an unauthorised dumping site. There is no monitoring. MCG should deploy manpower and issue challans to those who are dumping waste here. Without penalties, this will continue," said a resident of Sector 30, seeking anonymity. The dumping has also reduced the usable width of the adjoining service road. The lane was already narrow, and with waste piled along the edges, vehicles were left with limited space to pass. At times, rubbish spilled onto the motorable portion, further restricting movement, commuters said.Chairman of Malibu RWA's Federation, Vijay Shiv Nath, who frequently uses the stretch, said the condition reflects poorly on the city's civic management. "With rubbish piling up and sometimes spilling onto the road, the road is getting narrower," Nath said.Ravinder Yadav, additional commissioner of MCG, said, "This is unauthorised dumping. We will clear the site immediately."
