GURGAON: A 55-year-old farmer died on Thursday after a speeding canter truck rammed into a pickup vehicle from behind, moments after its occupants stopped to change a burst tyre.
The accident occurred around 3am on the Sohna-Gurgaon road flyover near Shri Ram Dhaba. The deceased, Sule Khan, a resident of Tapkan village in Nuh, was among four men who set out around midnight to transport tomatoes to a vegetable market in the city.
According to a complaint filed by his son Sajid, the pickup vehicle, a Bolero, suffered a rear tyre burst on the flyover. The occupants halted the vehicle and spent around 15 minutes replacing the damaged tyre.
Just as they were preparing to resume their journey, a rashly-driven canter truck crashed into them from behind.
The impact left Khan, along with Khalid, Haroon and the driver Rizwan, injured as they were standing near the vehicle at the time of the collision. Passers-by alerted the police control room, following which an emergency response vehicle and police teams reached the spot and shifted the injured to Sohna Civil Hospital.
Doctors declared Khan dead on arrival. Khalid, who sustained serious injuries, was referred to the local civil hospital and is currently undergoing treatment at PGIMS Rohtak. Haroon and Rizwan suffered minor injuries and are stated to be out of danger.
Police said the canter driver fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle. The damaged vehicles were moved aside to restore traffic on the busy stretch.
Based on Sajid’s statement and medical records, a case has been registered at Sadar police station under sections 281 (rash driving), 125(A) (rash or negligent acts that endanger human life or personal safety), and 106(1) (causing death due to negligence) of BNS. Police have initiated efforts to identify and apprehend the absconding driver.
