GURGAON: A visit to the Sohna Civil Hospital is enough to see its sorry state of affairs. The hospital, housed in a decent building of its own, lacks even the basic amenities and is severely short of adequate staff and doctors.
The 30-bed hospital has only seven doctors attending to the over 400 patients visiting its out patient department (OPD) daily.

The hospital does not have a single surgeon and the operation theatre is gathering dust. Most patients who need an operation are referred to the district Civil Hospital.
The hospital’s only blood bank remains dysfunctional and the instruments there are lying unused.
“There was no doctor to attend my daughter. With no sheets on the beds, she had to sleep on a couch. The hospital’s gynaecology department has no woman doctor and all caesarean cases are referred to the district civil hospital,” said Sunita Yadav, mother of a patient at the hospital.
“The existing doctors attending patients at the OPD are finding it extremely difficult to handle the daily rush. The hospital urgently needs doctors in the OPD department,” said a hospital staff. Doctors from the district civil hospital visit Sohna only once in a week.
The hospital infrastructure is in a shambles and lacks even a drinking water facility. “Patients have to bring water from home or buy from nearby shops. Water of the only water cooler is not fit for consumption,” said another hospital staff. Senior medical officer Dr Govind Saran could neither be contacted nor was he present at the hospital when TOI visited it on Monday.

The Haryana government in 2006 had made an announcement about increasing the number of beds in the hospital from 30 to 50, besides increasing the number of doctors. But till now nothing has been done about it. “Residents are angry over the false promises of the government and the area MLA. Sohna has remained neglected over the years,” said Jakir Husain, a resident of Sohna.
