The seven accused have been identified as Mohammad Zafar Iqbal who is the mastermind, Abhishek Mishra, Sumit, Noor Hussain, Abhishek Gupta, Sheikh Ibrahim and Mohammad Aadil. All seven are residents of West Bengal.

Vipin Dahiya, assistant commissioner of police (Crime), said, “They mainly cheated people from Australia and the United States by sending them fake emails about wrong payments done for items ordered online and that they can get the money refunded. Pretending to be from the tech support team of the website, the accused would tell people to transfer gift cards of 250-500 USD which they redeemed from China. They also manipulated victims to install remote access applications like Any Desk in their computer system and capture their bank account details.”

After receiving a tip-off, cops raided the fake call centre in Sector 67.

“We have arrested the seven people and they will be produced before a local court. Further investigation will reveal how many people they have defrauded so far,” ACP Dahiya said.

An FIR under sections 419 (cheating by personation) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC along with the relevant sections of the IT Act has been registered against the accused in the cybercrime police station (South).
