Shakti Rani Sharma
of Haryana Jan Chetna Party (HJCP) has officially joined as first female mayor of Ambala city municipal Corporation (MC), after an official oath-taking ceremony organized by the district administration at Police DAV school auditorium on Thursday.
All 20 elected ward members of Ambala city MC also took oaths and they were sworn in by Ambala divisional commissioner Deepti Umashankar.
Ambala deputy commissioner (DC) Ashok Kumar Sharma and district municipal commissioner (DMC) Parth Gupta were also present in the event, who welcomed the mayor and members with bouquets.
After the recent direct election of Ambala City MC, Shakti Rani was elected as mayor, while out of 20 ward member seats, Bharatiya Janata Party (
BJP) had won eight, HJCP seven,
Congress three and Haryana Democratic Front (HDF) two.
After taking oath as mayor, Shakti Rani Sharma said, "I thank Ambala residents for electing me as mayor and giving me this opportunity. I take this opportunity as very important and assure to fulfill this belief of people with full honesty. Whatever work has been trusted upon me for this city through MC, I will complete it with honesty."
On the other side, during the oath-taking ceremony ruling BJP leaders including state home minister
Anil Vij
, Ambala City MLA Aseem Goel and Ambala member parliament (MP) (Union minister of state for Jal Shakti) Rattan Lal Kataria were absent from the event, and their chairs remained empty on the stage. Also senior leaders of Congress including Naraingarh MLA Shailey Chaudhary and Barara MLA Varun Chaudhary who were also sent invitations were absent. Senior leaders of the HDF were not invited.
Official sources confirmed that all the above-named leaders of BJP and Congress were sent official invitations by the district administration but they did not attend the ceremony.
Congress ward no. 5 winner joins HJCPIn a jolt to Congress, Rajesh Mehta, who got elected as member of Ambala City MC from ward no. 5 on its ticket, joined HJCP in the presence of
party chief Venod Sharma
in Ambala on Thursday.
With this development, HJCP has a strong hold to elect
senior deputy mayor
and deputy mayor for Ambala City MC.
Talking to the media at his party office in Ambala City,
Venod Sharma
said, “I have old relations with Rajesh Mehta that is why he has given his support to HJCP for the development of Ambala.”
On this occasion, Rajesh Mehta said, “I have joined HJCP for the development of Ambala. Till the time, Venod Sharma remained MLA of Ambala City, it was developed. But till the BJP government has come, the development of Ambala City has stopped. I have joined for the welfare of residents of Ambala City.”
Now, HJCP has eight elected members to its bag out of 20, and it needs support of two more to achieve a majority in the city MC house.
