Rising temperature pushes Gurgaon towards heatwave spell, mercury to go up by 3°C

Gurgaon: With both day and night temperatures exceeding normal, IMD has issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions in parts of the state, including Gurgaon, from April 21.

IMD data shows the city edging towards heatwave thresholds. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 38.6°C at the main observatory on Sunday, while readings touched 39°C at Gurgaon KVK and 39.9°C at NorthCap University. Minimum temperatures ranged from 21.2°C to 21.5°C, contributing to “warm night” conditions flagged by the IMD for April 21–23.

Across Haryana, maximum temperatures were above normal by nearly 3.9°C, with Rohtak recording the state’s highest at 42.3°C. Statewide, the average minimum temperature rose by 1.3°C in the past 24 hours and remained 2.1°C above normal.

According to the IMD’s Chandigarh centre forecast, maximum temperatures are likely to increase by another 3–5°C over the next five to six days. Heatwave conditions are expected at isolated places on April 21, 22 and 23, with warm nights during the same period.

Before the heat intensifies, isolated thunderstorm activity may bring brief relief. However, conditions are expected to turn dry thereafter, accelerating the temperature rise.

Meteorologists attribute the trend to prevailing upper-air circulation over southwest Rajasthan and a western disturbance influencing northern regions. While a fresh western disturbance is likely to affect the western Himalayan region from April 23, it is not expected to significantly ease heat conditions in the plains immediately.

The yellow alert indicates the onset of potentially stressful weather conditions, particularly during afternoon hours and nights when temperatures remain elevated. Authorities have advised residents to limit exposure during peak heat, stay hydrated and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.

With dry weather ahead and temperatures steadily rising, Gurgaon is set to experience its first sustained spell of heatwave conditions this season.
