Residents bat for composting at societies
GURGAON: The
A group of citizens has started holding awareness workshops in societies and offices to address a wide range of issues, including waste management, composting, rules applicable to waste burning and bursting of crackers in Gurgaon.
“Unlike other societies, we don’t have a waste management system in place yet. So we plan to raise awareness and get the system installed in our society. We also plan to hold awareness sessions against bursting of crackers,” said Gargi Bhargava, resident of The Laburnum.
Societies where these workshops will be held are Garden Estate, DLF Phase 5, Sushant Lok, DLF Westend Heights, The Laburnum and Silver Oaks.
Corporates have followed suit. “This crisis has forced people to think of solutions to end the smog menace. Today, I was called by the CEO of PeopleStrong to conduct a workshop on composting and gardening. Many in the office have decided to take measures towards living ecologically,” said
“Last Saturday’s protests got a positive response. Now we wish to take the campaign a notch higher, through awareness sessions on waste management in offices,” said Megha Jha of Nagarro.
People are also appealing to public for bringing down use of vehicles under the Green Right of Way (GROW) campaign, where residential societies and offices are asked to leave a passage outside their complexes for the convenience of pedestrians.
RWAs of The Palms in Sushant Lok and Sector 23A have pioneered implementing this idea. Residents are mobilising through social media to fight pollution.
Following the district administration’s order of imposing Section 144 CrPC, many have started sending pictures of open waste burning to MCG, to help it impose a clampdown.
