GURGAON: Released from prison the day before, a convict allegedly killed a 7-month-old infant after finding out that his wife, who was living with his brother, had the baby while he was serving time.
Police said the convict Vijay Sahni (30) was arrested on murder charges on Friday. The incident was reported in Nathupur on Thursday night.
Vijay, convicted in a chain-snatching case in 2022, had served his time in Bhondsi jail and was released from Bhondsi jail on April 24. After his release, he went to see his wife, who had started living with Vijay’s brother in Nathupur Hills.
“When Vijay was lodged in prison, his wife started living with Vijay's brother and gave birth to a girl seven months ago. On Thursday night, Vijay met his wife and learnt about the infant. He had an argument with his wife and during the argument, he picked up the girl and slammed her to the ground,” said DLF-3 inspector Balraj.
The commotion caught the attention of neighbours who then alerted police.
“After receiving the information, a team from DLF-3 station reached the spot and found the seven-month-old girl in an unconscious state. The girl was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared her dead,” a Gurgaon police spokesperson said.
In her statement to police, the infant’s mother, a labourer, said Vijay was caught illegally selling liquor in Delhi a few years ago.
Vijay had snatched a gold chain from a woman in Saraswati Vihar on Sept 24 that year and was arrested in October. He was convicted under sections 379A (snatching) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC in August 2022 by a Gurgaon sessions court.
The convict was lodged in Bhondsi jail, but was released after the Punjab and Haryana high court ruled in his favour, police said.
Vijay, now booked under IPC Section 302 (murder), will be produced before a court on Saturday.
