Nuh sees first black fungus death — a 37-year-old man

has reported its first case of mucormycosis (black fungus) death. A 37-year-old man from Palwal succumbed to the fungal infection at

Nalhar Medical College

on Sunday. According to the health department, a total of seven cases have been reported in the district so far.

A medical officer told TOI that people from other districts have also been admitted at the medical college for treatment, hence all black fungus patients aren’t necessarily locals. Asked about their treatment, the officer said, “We make a case file and share it with the state-level committee on black fungus. We then decide on the treatment based on the recommendations made by the committee.”

Haryana has so far seen 420 cases of black fungus, with Gurgaon recording the highest at 149. With the chances of mucormycosis cases going up in the coming days, the Nuh administration is also trying to increase awareness about its symptoms, said the official.

This comes even as the district saw a drop in Covid-19 positivity rate, which stood at 1.3% on Monday. “Last week’s average was 7.94%,” the official said. Even though villagers have expressed concerns about insufficient testing in rural areas, the district administration has dismissed these claims and said they are conducting a door-to-door survey to check the impact of the virus in villages.
