Liquor worth Rs 71 lakh seized, 225 FIRs registered in dist during MCC
Gurgaon: Police have seized 18,781 litres of illegal liquor worth Rs 71 lakh and registered 225 FIRs against those involved in its transportation in the district during the last month as part of an initiative to heighten monitoring of illegal activities in view of the upcoming assembly elections on Oct 5.To prevent any untoward incidents from happening during the model code of conduct and polling, police have set up checkpoints at 12 places in the city to monitor the movement of vehicles and prevent the transportation of illegal liquor.According to DETC (Excise) Amit Bhatia, the liquor was seized by enforcement teams and the police department between Aug 16, when the model code of conduct was implemented, and September 16."During elections, offering liquor as an inducement for votes is common, and illegal liquor is often brought in from other states. Since this is not possible through retail shops, under the direction of the district election officer, all activities at L1 and L13 warehouses in the district are being closely monitored," said Bhatia.District election officer and deputy commissioner of Gurgaon Nishant Kumar Yadav said teams are working in every assembly constituency to maintain the sanctity of the election process. "As part of this effort, carrying more than Rs 50,000 in cash when the model code of conduct is in place will result in action by the authorities," Yadav said, adding that if people are carrying large amounts of cash, they should also have on them a transaction slip from the bank to avoid seizure. Details of any expensive gifts, gold, silver, or other valuable items being transported should also be produced when asked, he said.To maintain law and order, police teams were also conducting checks at all entry and exit points of the city and the district, including Kherki toll plaza, KMP toll plaza at Panchgaon, MCD toll plaza, Ghamdoj toll, Kapashera border, and Bandhwari toll.
