GURUGRAM: The department of electrical inspectorate, Gurugram, has directed developer Unitech to conduct safety checks and submit a report on the condition of

lifts

in one of its residential societies after it received a complaint.

Residents

of Unitech

The Residences

in Sector 33 had approached the department on Friday over frequent incidents of lift malfunctioning in the society.

In their complaint to the department, residents said their lives have been put at risk several times and highlighted a clause in the Haryana Lifts and Escalators Act, 2008, which has provisions of penalties on both the builder and the lift manufacturer in case of non-compliance.

The Unitech management could not be contacted despite repeated attempts by TOI.

A senior executive engineer of electrical inspectorate said, “The builder and the has been directed to ensure safety of residents and to follow the rules. We will take action against the party concerned in case of any violation. We have asked Unitech to provide maintenance records.”

“In all 24 lifts in the society, there has been several incidents where residents were trapped inside. The Automatic Rescue Device (ARD) is also not working. We had filed a police complained in 2016 against the maintenance agency, but nothing has been done so far,” said The Residences RWA president Vikram Bishnoi.

Residents also alleged that the builder and the maintenance agency aren’t providing a permanent solution to the issue despite repeated complaints.

Another resident, Sahil Kumar said he and his wife were trapped in a lift for over 20 minutes on Friday night. “When we were finally able to get out, the display panel said we were on the 18th floor, when the tower is of only 14 floors,” he said.
