GURUGRAM: In a major setback for the Congress party ahead of

Lok Sabha

elections this year, party's candidate Randeep Singh Surjewala lost the

Jind

assembly

by-election

by a massive margin. He was at number 3 after BJP's Krishan Middha and

Digvijay Singh Chautala

of

Jannayak Janata Party

's (JJP).

The winning candidate, BJP's Krishan Middha, polled 49,229 votes, he was followed by Digvijay Singh Chautala of Jannayak Janata Party's (JJP) who secured 37,681 votes. 21,392 votes were polled in favour of Surjewala.

A total of 21 candidates, including two women, had contested the bypoll on January 28.

The by-election on Jind seat was necessitated after the death of INLD MLA Hari Chan Middha. He had represented Jind twice.
