GURGAON: Every time it rains in Gurgaon, Hero Honda Chowk gets flooded. This spot on the Expressway is the lowest point in the city and all the rainwater and sewage from the pipelines flow onto the service road and also the main carriageway.
Soon after the first showers this stretch was inundated on Monday. According to HUDA officials attributed the mess to the early arrival of the monsoon and the ongoing repair work.“The sewerage line at Khandsa chowk was under repair.

Usually such works take a long time since it also involves digging roads and shifting utilities. However, we used a layer of hot rubber and textile which form a crust within the damaged pipeline which is supposed to last for up to 10 years. The pipeline was plugged on the first day of the monsoon, which arrived three days ahead of its schedule,” said HUDA administrator Nitin Yadav.
To find a permanent solution, HUDA is building a storm water drain, a parallel sewerage line and also a natural nullah to cater to the needs of the city and provide relief. In the absence of a drainage system beyond Sector 10 nearby industries and villages pump their water into the existing HUDA lines, adding to its existing load.
The existing HUDA sewerage line crossing the expressway near Hero Honda Chowk (to go to Dhanwapur STP) is already running full capacity as it caters to sewage from the east district. When it rains, it overflows due to excess rain water flowing into it. HUDA has made an alternative arrangement by connecting a line to the Behrampur STP to take the load off the existing sewerage system.
It is also expected that an under-construction HUDA storm water drain running along Sector 9/10 peripheral road will be made functional by this weekend. This will partly help reduce the Hero Honda Chowk waterlogging.
As a temporary solution, HUDA and the municipal corporation have built a sump well in Khandsa village on Badshapur drain.
Meanwhile, litigation had delayed the land acquisition in Khandsa village required to build the connecting linkage in the Badshapur nullah. Once complete, this will be connected to the main drain leading up to the Najafgarh drain, 30km ahead.
