Hospital staffer on way to work dies after car hits bike on eway in Gurgaon
Gurgaon: A 58-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run accident near the Sarhol border on Saturday.Shivnath Mishra, a resident of Dwarka Sector 19, was the head of the purchase department at World Laparoscopy Hospital.
The driver of a taxi that allegedly hit his scooter between 10.30am and 11am on NH8 fled the spot. "CCTV footage is being examined to trace him," a police officer said.Later, the incident snowballed into a controversy over alleged medical overbilling by a private hospital, where Mishra was taken for treatment.Shivnath was commuting from Delhi to Gurgaon for work when the white car hit him from behind, police said. Due to the impact, he suffered severe head injuries and collapsed on the road. "Traffic police personnel unlocked his mobile phone using fingerprint access and informed his family. He was rushed by the PCR staff to a private hospital in DLF 3, where he underwent treatment but succumbed to his injuries around 10.30pm the same day," an officer said.Mishra's son, Bhuneshwar, has questioned the hospital's billing practices. He told TOI the family was initially informed that critical care would cost around Rs 2 lakh. However, the estimate was later revised to Rs 5 lakh after a neurologist advised surgery due to internal brain bleeding. Doctors later said that the surgery was successful, but Shivnath's blood pressure dropped soon after and he was declared dead. Despite the patient being admitted for less than 10 hours, the hospital allegedly presented a bill of around Rs 5.98 lakh. Bhuneshwar alleged that the charges included costs for multiple days of observation and medication, "even though the duration of treatment was much shorter".Following arguments and intervention by staff members from the victim's workplace, the bill was reportedly reduced to about Rs 2.5 lakh. The family has questioned the necessity of the procedures and alleged that the hospital may have continued treatment despite knowing the injuries were fatal. Police said a case was registered under sections 281 (rash driving) and 106 (causing death by negligence) of BNS at DLF Phase 3 police station.Man killed in accident: A man, who was working in the nursing department of Fortis Hospital, was killed in a suspected hit-and-run incident near Rajiv Chowk during the intervening night of Dec 21 and 22, police said. The vehicle involved in the incident remains unidentified.Rahul Sharma, son of Kailash Chandra, was a resident of Maniya village in Rajasthan's Dholpur. Rahul was residing in Gurgaon. Police said no complaint has been filed.Man's body found: Police have launched a probe after the body of an unidentified man, believed to be 31 years old, was discovered near the Shivam chilled point area on the Sohna highway. According to the preliminary investigation, the body was found in a condition suggesting a fatal road accident. An investigating officer from the Sohna City police station reached the spot. The police have registered an FIR under sections 106 (causing death by negligence) and 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) of the BNS.
