police have booked five persons for khair (senegalia catechu) wood smuggling. Chhachhrauli range forest officer (RFO) Sushil Kumar lodged a complaint against Abdu Islam of Chuharpur Mangal Singh village; Irshad, Poli, and Dawood of Jatanwala village; and Mustqin of Kotra Kahan Singh village. They were smuggling
khair wood
in a car after axing it from Mehrniwala jungle compartment No. 2 in the Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary area, police were told.
The RFO said when the forest officials asked the smugglers to stop their vehicle for checking at a naka on Taharpur-Kot village road, they attempted to run them over, injured an official and fled from the spot. On the complaint of the RFO, the Yamunanagar police registered a case under the Indian Forest Act and the Wildlife (Protection) Act at Chhachhrauli police station on Saturday.
“At about 1.20 am on Saturday, a white hatchback bearing registration number HR-02-2100 was spotted on Taharpur-Kot road and the driver was asked to stop. Instead of stopping his car, the driver attempted to run over the forest officials and we saved ourselves after getting off the road. Forest guard Ravinder Singh received injuries as he was hit by the vehicle.
