GURUGRAM: Over a year after GMDA approved a plan to create a 15-km-long cycle track between IFFCO Chowk and the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), work on the project may finally begin by the end of this month.

According to GMDA officials, they are currently in the process of allotting the work. “We first floated the project tender in February this year, but the number of bidders who came forward was low, and there was not enough competition. So, we floated the tender again, and this time, it has been successful,” said a senior GMDA official. “Currently, we are allotting the work. We may organise a meeting later this week, where the final approval will come in. After that, work can begin,” he said.

With the project likely to take a year to complete, cyclists are unlikely to experience its benefits before December next year. “This is a long cycle track, 15km in length, 7.5km on both sides of the road, and will require nearly a year for completion. We will expedite the work and ensure it meets the November-end deadline,” added the official.

Besides a cycle track, the project includes the construction of a footpath along the stretch beginning from IFFCO Chowk, moving along the underpass at the junction and Huda City Centre up to SPR.Existing footpath patches would undergo renovation.

The stretch will also get lights and road safety furniture. Moreover, bollards will be set up along its entire length to prevent motor vehicles from encroaching onto the cycle track.
