GURGAON: The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority will step into MCG’s shoes for cleaning internal sewer lines in Sector 15 part-2 with super sucker machines as
MCG repeatedly failed to provide a resolution to the perennial problem of overflowing sewage. Last week, GMDA was given the charge of service roads along master roads, which earlier was under MCG jurisdiction.
Although this will be a one-time cleanliness work that GMDA will undertake at an estimated cost of Rs 2.14 crore, the operation and maintenance will continue to remain with the civic body.
The GMDA is responsible for all major services, including roads, stormwater drains, sewer lines, CCTV cameras, greenbelts, while the MCG has mandate over all the internal services in colonies and sectors such as roads, sewers, drains, garbage, streetlights among others.
According to an official, GMDA CEO and MCG commissioner PC Meena has decided that the desilting of internal sewer lines in Sector 15 part-2 will be carried out by the metropolitan authority. Under this, a 13km network on internal sewer lines consisting of pipes, varying in sizes between 200mm and 600mm, will be cleaned within six months after the work is allotted. “The infra-II division of GMDA has been given the mandate to undertake the work. It will be a one-time work, following which MCG will be in charge of its operation and maintenance. All internal sewer lines of the sector up to the GMDA’s master sewer line on Old Delhi-Gurgaon road will be desilted. We will soon be going to initiate the tendering process, which will take three months to complete, and another six months will be required to carry out the work,” said a senior GMDA official adding that the rehabilitation of existing master sewer lines with CIPP technology and desilting has already been done.
Earlier, five executive engineers and two SDOs were deputed with MCG (engineering wing) as the corporation was facing shortage of staff. Sector 15 is one of the posh localities in the city and home to several VIPs. However, it has been facing the problem of sewage overflow for the last 6 years.
Mahavir Singh, the RWA president of Sector 15 part-2, said that the MCG has utterly failed in providing relief to the residents despite repeated complaints. “Overflowing of sewer lines has become a perennial problem for the last 5-6 years, with hardly any proper cleanliness being done by MCG. Almost every other day, the sewer line in the area gets choked and sewage overflows onto the road creating health hazards. All sewer cleaning work has been done only on paper,” he added.
