Flyovers, underpasses, railbridge at 5 major Gurgaon junctions to clear gridlocks
Gurgaon: Five grade separators — including flyovers and underpass — are set to decongest key junctions in the city. Chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Monday allocated Rs 302 crore for the projects in the state budget. The grade separators have been planned at Dadi Sati Chowk, Ambedkar Chowk, Bakhtawar Chowk, Millennium City Centre and the Garhi railway crossing — all known choke points that routinely witness peak-hour gridlock.
At Dadi Sati Chowk in new sectors, the detailed project report (DPR) for a flyover has been approved. Officials said the project would be floated for tender this month. Estimated to cost around Rs 47 crore, the 630-metre-long flyover was cleared in July 2024 during the 13th authority meeting. The three-lane structure — 11 metres wide and flanked by 7.5-metre-wide service roads on both sides — is expected to ease congestion at the intersection of sectors 85, 86, 89 and 90. The junction currently handles nearly 9,770 passenger car units (PCUs) during peak hours, a figure projected to cross 10,000 PCUs by the time construction begins.Ambedkar Chowk, another traffic hotspot, is awaiting the DPR approval for a flyover. The proposed Rs 59-crore structure will come up at the busy intersection connecting sectors 45, 46, 51 and 52. Plans include a 950-metre-long, two-lane bidirectional flyover aimed at streamlining movement through the junction, which records around 6,100 PCUs during peak hours, according to GMDA data. The stretch is heavily used by residents of Ardee City and Mayfield Garden, besides commuters from Malibu Towne and South City-2. Officials said the flyover will reduce stoppages and ensure smoother through movement, particularly for traffic heading towards Sohna Road.At Bakhtawar Chowk on Netaji Subhash Marg, while GMDA approved the design for a 550-metre-long underpass, GMRL, which is executing the project alongside metro construction, has proposed a double-decker structure. According to the plan, vehicular traffic will move on the lower deck, while the metro corridor runs above. A GMDA official said the matter was discussed in details and a final decision will be taken by the govt. The junction will also host the proposed Sector 47 metro station on the Millennium City Centre–Cyber City line, integrating road and rail infrastructure at one of the city's busiest intersections. A proposed underpass at Millennium City Centre is also moving ahead, with a consultant currently conducting a detailed study. The Rs 80-crore project received administrative approval in Nov last year. The intersection, which sees heavy traffic from Millennium City Centre, Signature Tower and Sector 29, frequently witnesses long tailbacks during peak hours.A rail overbridge (ROB) has been planned at the Garhi railway crossing to improve connectivity between sectors 36 and 37 and Dwarka Expressway. Officials said the proposal is under discussion with railway authorities. Apart from offering an alternative link to emerging sectors along the expressway, the ROB is expected to ease pressure on the existing Basai ROB that connects Basai to Dhankot. The budget also makes provisions for strengthening basic infrastructure. A new 100 MLD water treatment plant, along with a three-day canal water storage facility, will be built at Basai Water Works at a cost of Rs 247 crore. Additionally, a 6th 100 MLD plant is planned at Chandu-Budhera Water Works for Rs 78 crore. To address growing traffic volumes along key corridors, the govt proposed an eight-lane, 5.1-km elevated corridor from NH8 to Vatika Chowk, along with a cloverleaf interchange at Vatika Chowk, at an estimated cost of Rs 1,065 crore. Another 8.84-km, eight-lane elevated stretch on the Southern Peripheral Road from Vatika Chowk to Ghata village is planned at a cost of Rs 1,846 crore.
