The family not only provided them food, but also stood guard outside the house so that no one attack-ed them.

By Monday evening, when the attackers had dispersed and police teams were out on the roads, the family gave the father and son T-shirts with "Muslim symbols" and a burqa to the cop so that they reached home safely.

Residents of Sohna, property dealer Karan Singh and his younger son Vivek had gone to Pinangwan in Nuh to see a plot. While returning in their Fortner, they decided to participate in the Brij Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra that was headed towards the Shiv temple in Nalhar. They had travelled a few kilometres with the yatra when they came under attack.

Singh and Vivek were dragged out of their SUV and thrashed with sticks. They ran for their lives.

Out of breath, they found shelter in a house whose residents waved to them and assured them they would be safe inside. It was a Muslim joint family of 15 that lived in the house.

A few minutes later, there were frantic knocks on the door again. This time, it was the cop running from the stone-pelting crowd.

Fearing they might face a backlash, Singh chose not to name the family members. "After they had let us in, they stood guard outside the house so that no one ventured nearby. If there is a guardian angel, it is them," the property dealer told TOI. "To make us comfortable, they gave us food and first-aid."

Singh, his son Vivek and the cop stayed in the house for almost five hours. "When things had settled somewhat, they gave me and my son T-shirts with Muslim symbols. The cop was given a burqa."

By the time Singh returned to his Fortuner, it had been burnt down. All the documents he had left inside and his mobile phone were burnt too. A police team escorted the father-son duo to their Sohna home.
