GURUGRAM: A woman allegedly died under suspicious circumstances in Badshapur on Monday. Her family said her husband’s family murdered her over dowry. They also blocked traffic on the Gurgaon-Badshapur Road for 40 minutes seeking the registration of an FIR for dowry death, after which police filed a case against the family of the woman’s husband.
The woman, who was in her 30s, has been identified as Lalita. The complainant, Chotu Ram, a resident of Sector 17 in Faridabad, said he was childless and adopted Lalita, the daughter of one of his brothers. Lalita was earlier married to someone else but they got a divorce within a few years of marriage.
In May 2021, Lalita married Bhagat Singh, a resident of Badshapur. “We incurred many expenses and spent beyond our means at the wedding, but from the very beginning, Bhagat and his family were not happy. They were harassing Lalita for dowry,” Ram said. He added that Lalita’s mother-in-law Meena, sister-in-laws Jyoti and Rajni, brother-in-law Raju and father-in-law Heera Lal were harassing constantly. “They were putting pressure on her to give them more money so they can buy a shop in Badshahpur. Her husband Bhagat also tortured her,” Ram said.
He also alleged Lalita was physically assaulted and locked inside her room with no access to a mobile phone or even food. Lalita visited her parents on Rakshabandhan and narrated everything to them, he said. “We came to know that Bhagat’s first marriage was dissolved due to their dowry demands,” said Ram.
On September 3, a panchayat was conducted in Badshapur, in which Bhagat and his family admitted to their mistake and assured they wouldn’t trouble Lalita any more. After their reassurances, Lalita’s parents left her with her husband. “But even after the panchayat, there was no change in their behaviour. They continued to harass Lalita and kept her locked in the house,” Ram said.
On Monday, Ram received a call from a family friend informing him that Lalita had passed away. The family rushed to Badshapur to find that Lalita had died by the time was taken to a hospital. Bhagat and his parents claimed that she committed suicide. Ram then approached police.
Alleging a delay in filing on an FIR, the family blocked Gurgaon-Badshahpur road, after which a case was registered against Bhagat and his family under sections 304B (dowry death), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC at Badshapur police station the same day. “An FIR has been lodged and the matter is under investigation,” police spokesperson Subhash Boken said.
