Gurgaon: A 71-year-old retired government employee died in a hit-and-run accident near his home in Sector 57 on Friday night.
Raj Kumar Jain, a retired Madhya Pradesh govt employee living at Legend Apartment, was struck by an unidentified vehicle while returning home after buying milk from a nearby shop. His family was unaware of the incident until police arrived the next morning to recover the body.
Police said the body was found around 7am on Saturday by morning walkers who alerted authorities. "We received a call and found an elderly man lying next to the footpath, with his footwear on the road," said Sector-56 SI Manoj Kumar. "Security guards from Legend Apartment, about 100 metres away, identified him as a resident. His son later confirmed the identity."
Paritosh Jain, the victim's son, said in his complaint that the family had gone to sleep around 8:30 pm on Friday, unaware that Raj Kumar had gone out to buy milk. "We learned about the accident only on Saturday morning," he said.
The police said that Raj had suffered multiple injuries and died on the spot. "The body was taken to the morgue, and forensic teams collected broken plastic fragments believed to be from the vehicle," SI Kumar added. "There were no CCTV cameras at the scene, so we are reviewing footage from nearby areas to identify the vehicle."
A case was registered against an unknown offender under sections 106 (causing death due to negligence) and 281 (rash driving on a public way) of the BNS. The body was handed over to the family after the autopsy.
