Drains not cleaned for yrs, manholes broken, sewage flows on to streets

Residents of Sector 43 in Gurgaon have raised concerns about overflowing sewer lines, which have been a persistent problem for the past two years. Around 70% of the manholes in the sector are overflowing, leading to unhygienic conditions and health risks. The broken or uncovered manholes also pose a danger of accidents. Despite multiple complaints to the MCG officials, no action has been taken. The residents met with senior officials to find a solution, but no progress has been made. The increasing population and inadequate infrastructure are contributing to the problem.

Narender Mehta, RWA general secretary of Sector 43, said that theyhave informed MCG officials multiple times, but no remedial measures have been taken.
“Overflowing of sewage has become a chronic problem in the sector and residents are forced to survive in such an unhygienic condition. MCG has not carried out proper cleaning of sewer lines in years, and that’s why they are clogged. Although the desilting of sewer lines with bucket machines was finalised on paper, nothing has been done on the ground,” Mehta said.
The sewer lines were laid over a decade ago and with an increasing number of population, the existing infrastructure is not being able to cater to the demand. Last month, the residents met MCG commissioner PC Meena and other senior officials to find a solution. “Apart from paying lip service to us, nothing has been done to resolve the problem.
This is a major concern as the residents are forced to put up with the awful smell emanating from dirty water. This accumulated water is a perfect ground for mosquitoes to breed,” RWA president RS Sirohi said. Asked about the issue, a senior MCG official said, “Sewer cleaning is a part of regular maintenance, I will get the matter checked and needful will be done to rectify the problem.”
