Gurgaon hit-and-run: Bizman mowed down by speeding car while cycling near DLF 2
GURGAON: A 58-year-old man died after being hit by a car while cycling in DLF 2 on Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred around 7am on one of the internal roads where Amitabh Jain, a resident of Bougainvilla Marg in the same locality, routinely went cycling.
Passersby rushed Jain to a private hospital, where he died a couple of hours later.
According to police, CCTV footage shows a white Santro car ramming into the cyclist and fleeing the spot. The vehicle, registered in Delhi, has been traced. "We have identified the car — DL 3C BQ 2461 — and are working to trace the owner. He will be arrested soon," SHO Sunil Kumar said.
A relative said, "He shifted to Gurgaon in 2014 and lived here with his wife, who is a senior conservator at Parliament Museum. He would go cycling every morning on Akashneem Marg. When we reached Max Hospital, his pulse was visible and there were no major external injuries. But his pulse began to drop and around 9am he breathed his last. Their elder son, 29, works at an IT company in London, and their daughter, 25, lives in Bengaluru."
The SHO said the autopsy would be conducted on Thursday after Jain's son arrives from London. The body has been kept in the local mortuary. A case has been registered under sections 281 (rash driving), 106 (death by negligence) and 324(2) (mischief) of BNS at DLF Phase 2 police station.
The family of Jain, who earlier ran a chemist shop in Delhi's Malka Ganj area, is struggling to come to terms with the loss.
"He was a travel enthusiast and recently went on a bike trip to Jaipur. Everyone is in shock. He underwent a liver transplant nearly 10 years ago and to think that someone who survived that died in a road accident is heartbreaking," the relative added. Pedestrians, cyclists and two-wheeler riders remain among the most vulnerable road users. This year, around 15 cyclists have died in over 25 accidents in the city, while last year saw 18 deaths in 27 incidents.
Overall, 428 people have lost their lives in around 1,000 road accidents in Gurgaon till Nov this year, compared with 442 fatalities during the same period last year. A total of 478 people were killed in road crashes in 2024.
"The internal roads of our colony have virtually turned into a thoroughfare between NH8 and MG Road, especially for cabs and outsiders. Security has been reduced to a formality as anyone can drive in without being stopped. The guards are just there for name's sake and speeding vehicles inside the residential lanes put lives at risk. It is the developer's responsibility to ensure a secure living and the least they can do is introduce proper access-controlled entry into the colony. Every entry point should have a boom barrier and monitoring system. It is extremely unfortunate that such an incident happened," said Col Anil Nanda, a resident of DLF 2.
Another resident, Vikas Thapar, asked, "What is the point of calling this a gated colony when safety is missing on the ground?"
