20% students anaemic: Nuh rolls out drive to tackle malnutrition
Gurgaon: The Ayush department has launched a comprehensive initiative to address anaemia and low weight among students in Nuh, following alarming health findings from a year-long health survey under Ayurvidya Yojana. The survey, which assessed the health of 10,485 children across govt schools, revealed that approximately 15-20% of students are anaemic and underweight.
Following this, the education department has developed a targeted plan to improve children's health in Nuh, focusing on promoting iron-rich foods and balanced diets. Teachers, including those who authored a research paper on improving the food habits of students, have been trained as school health ambassadors to raise awareness among students about the importance of nutrition.
The plan formulated by Ayush department includes the administration of necessary medicines along with recommendations for improving daily routines and diets.
"Anaemia continues to be a significant health issue among women and children in this district, largely attributed to the area's economic struggles, limited awareness about health, and poor access to balanced diets. To address these issues, the Ayush Department launched the Ayurvidya Yojana in Jan last year, aimed at conducting health checkups for children studying in govt schools. Over one year, health assessments were carried out on 10,485 children across 241 schools", said Dr Yashbir Gehlawat, a senior official from the district Ayush department.
Data of the health checkups conducted between July 2024 and Feb 2025 showed that out of 5,570 students, 1,476 (26.4%) had anaemia. "A significant number of children were also found to be underweight for their age and height, further compounding the district's health challenges", said Dr Yashbir. Kusum Malik, an official from the district's Nipun mission, told TOI that the students have been given folic acid tablets.
