Yellow alert for heat till tomorrow
Panaji: The India meteorological department (IMD) has extended its yellow alert for heat in Goa until Sunday, warning of continued hot and humid conditions. The yellow alert was initially issued until Saturday.
According to the IMD, isolated pockets of Goa will continue to experience hot and humid weather during the extended period, with maximum temperatures likely to range between 35°C and 37°C.
The IMD has also forecast that the maximum temperature will likely stay within the same range over the next seven days.
In the coming 24 hours, the IMD anticipates that the maximum temperature will reach approximately 37°C, with minimum temperatures to be around 24°C. Dry weather conditions are also expected to persist over both North and South Goa districts until March 13, with no rain forecast. This dry spell raises concerns about the possibility of dry grass fires, and the IMD has recommended that people take preventive measures when outdoors to avoid heat-related health issues and fire hazards.
Residents and tourists are advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours, and wear appropriate clothing to minimize the risks of heat-related illnesses.
On Friday, Panaji recorded maximum temperature of 35.2°C while Mormugai recorded 36.4°C. The minimum temperature at both stations saw a rise as Panaji recorded 25.2°C which is a departure from normal by three degrees C, while Mormugao recorded 25.4°C, a departure from normal by 2.2 C.
