Will resolve public issues as per rule book, says Gaonkar
Panaji: Two-time Sanvordem BJP MLA, Ganesh Gaonkar, was elected as the new speaker of the assembly on Thursday. He secured 32 votes against seven.
Shortly after getting elected, Gaonkar said he would apprise all members of the rule book for the efficient functioning of the House. “We are here to discuss and resolve public issues as per the rule book,” he said.
Chief minister Pramod Sawant congratulated Gaonkar on behalf of his party and the members of the House. “I am confident justice will be done to the post and the House will function smoothly,” he said.
Opposition members urged the speaker to give them proper opportunities in addressing public issues. Leader of the opposition, Yuri Alemao said, “We are seven in number and have a lot of expectations from the speaker. Though we are a minority in the House, we are the majority outside as 63% voted against the govt.”
Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai stated that Gaonkar has vast experience in administration having cracked the Goa Public Service Commission examination. “Gaonkar has worked as a union leader and knows how to start the mining business,” he said.
“There is a saying that the opposition should have its say, and you may have your way. We expect from you that you will give us the opportunity and hear us,” he added.
The House unanimously congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for GST reforms. Gaonkar reconstituted various house committees, including a committee to study matters related to the Mhadei river.
RG’s Viresh Borkar said the common man faces a lot of injustice. And being the opposition, it is the legislators’ duty to raise their issues in the assembly. “We have a lot of expectations from the Speaker in addressing public issues,” Borkar said. “I urge you not to be biased and give justice to the people of the state.” Velim MLA Cruz Silva said they would always cooperate with Gaonkar in running the House.
