Water pipeline damaged at Paroda, supply to South Goa hit

Margao: Water supply to most of South Goa was disrupted on Tuesday afternoon when an earthmoving machine accidentally damaged an air valve on a 1400mm diameter water pipeline during some levelling work by the water resources department (WRD) at Paroda.
PWD engineers responded promptly and repaired the valve by late evening. Water supply, which was suspended following the damage, was restored by Tuesday night in a controlled and regulated manner. The PWD officials expect normal service to resume by Wednesday.
According to Shanu Gaonkar, the assistant engineer of the water supply division at Selaulim, the affected pipeline carries water from the old 160 MLD water treatment plant. This line runs parallel to another pipeline from the new water treatment plant at Paroda, he said.
“We immediately halted water supply through the damaged pipeline once we located the problem,” said Gaonkar, who oversaw the repairs. “After fixing the issue, we gradually restored the water supply. Some areas in Salcete and Mormugao may experience temporary disruptions due to this incident,” he said.
