Water levels at Selaulim dam touch 50% mark, before-time spillover likely

Panaji: Within the first two weeks of the arrival of monsoon in Goa, water levels in almost all major reservoirs in the state have neared the half-way mark.
Catering to the water requirement of most parts of South Goa, Selaulim reservoir in Uguem, Sanguem, is 50% full. As the monsoon arrived early this year, the Selaulim dam is also expected to experience spillover earlier if the monsoon activity remains strong. Usually, the spillover is witnessed around July 7.
Hundreds of visitors throng the Selaulim dam each year after the reservoir experiences overflow, to witness the water falling down the crest. ">The phenomenon of overflow that continues for four months of the season depends on the intensity of rainfall in the catchment area. The ‘duckbill’ spillway is designed to pass a maximum flood discharge of 1,450 cu m of water per second. The excess water flows into the Selaulim river and is used for irrigation.">
Meanwhile, at present, water levels are at 45% in Amthane, which caters to the needs of primarily Bardez and Pernem talukas.
Water levels in Chapoli and Gaunem in Canacona have been recorded at 52% and 72% respectively. Similarly, the Panchwadi reservoir, which caters to the needs of Shiroda and surrounding areas, is currently 41% full.
Levels in Anjunem reservoir in Sattari, however, remain low at just 14%. Tillari reservoir in Dodamarg, Maharashtra, whose water is supplied to parts of North Goa, is also only 26% full.
