Two oral cancer cases detected at free camp held at Shiroda

Panaji: Two cases of oral cancer — of the lower lip and border of the tongue — were detected at the 12th free cancer screening camp organised by the GMC, directorate of health services and Goa Dental College, at the Shiroda public health centre, on Saturday. The team also detected 12 pre-cancer cases at the camp: Five of leukoplakia, five of tobacco pouch keratosis, and two of oral submucous fibrosis.

A total of 269 people, 206 of them females, were screened. Mammographies were performed on eight benign breast tumours, and pap smears were performed to detect cervical cancer in 103 women at the camp. Nine prostate-specific antigen tests were also carried out to detect prostate cancer.

At the 12 cancer screening camps organised so far, 13 cancer cases and 47 pre-cancer cases have been detected. A van, equipped with advanced diagnostic tools, visits public health centres in various parts of the state for the purpose.
