Two daily wage workers held for Betim murder
Panaji: Porvorim police on Monday arrested two daily wage workers from Jharkhand in connection with the murder of an unidentified person at Betim on Saturday. The victim’s identity remains unknown.
The investigation revealed that the two accused met the deceased on the day of the murder and were drinking together at Malim, when a fight broke out between the trio. North Goa SP Akshat Kaushal said that police received a call about an unidentified person lying under the Mandovi bridge.
The case was registered as an unnatural death. Kaushal said when police visited the spot, they noticed injuries on the deceased’s head and a laterite stone with blood lying near the body. “It was revealed that there was a fight between the deceased and the accused. Empty liquor bottles, disposable glasses, a water bottle were found lying on the floor in the shade,” said Kaushal. Based on initial inquiries, a murder case was registered against unknown persons for the murder of an unidentified male, approximately 30 years old. Teams were formed under the supervision of PI Rahul Parab to trace the accused.
“The teams conducted a thorough search operation and managed to apprehend two accused persons, namely 18-year-old Krishna Pradhan and 23-year-old Bhaula alias Bhola alias Narayan Singh, both residents of Jharkhand. They worked as daily wage labourers on fishing boats,” he said. Both accused are currently in police custody. Efforts are on to identify the deceased. The accused arrived in Goa around three months ago, after fishing activities resumed in the state.
“One aspect which helped in solving the case was the detailed records being maintained at the Betim outpost of Malim for all labourers working at the jetty. When police caught the accused, they were in such an inebriated state that they were not able to reveal their backgrounds, such as their place of stay, etc. At this stage, police were able to get all the information verified by cross-checking it with the information kept in the register,” said Kaushal.
