Trijoy looks to find his feet with new club Gokulam Kerala
Panaji: Not many Goan players have tasted success outside the state, but Trijoy Dias is confident he can make his mark at Gokulam Kerala FC.
Trijoy was a lively presence on the wings for Churchill Brothers FC, scoring six times in 20 appearances in a season marred by controversies for the I-League title last season.
Although the Goan side ended up runnersup to Inter Kashi FC after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) verdict, Trijoy had a fruitful season.
So why move to Gokulam Kerala?
“Churchill gave me a great platform, and I’m proud of what we achieved. But Gokulam Kerala presented an exciting project with a strong focus. I felt it was the right step for my career,” Trijoy told TOI.
Churchill provided Trijoy a lifeline when no one showed enough faith in the talented attacker. The 26-year-old was banned for the 2020-21 season by the Goa Football Association after being found guilty of assaulting a match referee during his stint with Sporting Clube de Goa. That was a dark phase for the youngster, but he overcame that phase with single-minded focus, and is now ready to write a new chapter.
“I know playing outside Goa isn’t easy, many players have faced challenges. but I see it as a chance to step out of my comfort zone and grow. I’ve thought it through, and I’m ready to adapt quickly, and give everything I have for the club and its supporters,” said Trijoy.
With Derrick Pereira as the technical director at Gokulam Kerala, Trijoy will get to learn more. New coach Jose Hevia did a commendable job with youngsters at Shillong Lajong FC and Trijoy could benefit.
“This season, I want to help Gokulam Kerala fight for the title. Personally, I want to keep improving, contribute with goals and assists. Long-term, my dream is to represent India,” said Trijoy.
Trijoy is back in Goa, this time with his new side for duties at the Super Cup.
Gokulam Kerala are clubbed alongside Bengaluru FC, Punjab FC and Mohammedan Sporting Club. They start their campaign against Punjab at Athletic Stadium, Bambolim, on Monday.
Gokulam Kerala won back-to-back I-Leagues in 2020 and 2021. They have history and hunger. With the squad they have, Gokulam Kerala are certain to push for the I-League title and move to the Indian Super League (ISL).
“I’m far from perfect and always looking to improve. Right now, the focus is on improving decision-making in the final third, becoming more consistent throughout 90 minutes and building my fitness. I believe in constantly pushing myself to get better every day,” said Trijoy.
