Tourist hurt after shorts get caught in boat’s motor at Calangute beach
Panaji/Calangute: A 38-year-old tourist from Maharashtra had a close shave after his shorts got entangled in the outboard motor of a fibreglass boat during the extended Eid weekend. The man sustained leg injuries, but his close encounter could have easily had fatal consequences, said locals. Lifeguards said he ignored “multiple warnings” about staying out of the designated water sports zone.
Drishti Marine said the man attempted to tug the boat’s rope but they could not fathom the reason for his actions. Lifesaver Vinod Gaonkar administered first aid.
At Palolem beach, two kayakers from Pune were saved from drowning. The two men, aged 30 and 33 years, ventured around 500m into the sea when water flooded their kayak, causing panic. A Drishti Marine lifesaver noticed them in distress and rushed to their rescue using a jetski to bring them safely ashore.
During the same weekend, lifesavers also responded to several other emergencies along Goa’s coastline. At Arossim Beach, a girl aged between five and seven years, was pulled into the sea by strong waves while swimming with her parents. A lifesaver sprang into action and rescued the girl.
A similar incident occurred at Arambol Beach, where a 40-year-old Kazakh man got caught in a rip current. Drishti Marine captain Sandeep Mapankar responded swiftly and brought him to safety. On Ashvem beach, a 30-year-old woman from Delhi found herself trapped in a rip current after swimming about 70m into the sea. Her cries for help alerted lifesaver Sumit Ankolekar, who, along with Nagesh Sarang, brought her safely to shore with the help of a jetski.
Finally, at Agonda Beach, a 50-year-old Delhi man was rescued by lifesaver Ankush Vagonkar, who brought him to shore with a rescue tube.
