PANAJI: A 58-year-old man from Tivim died in a road accident at St Cruz on Tuesday afternoon. "The mishap occurred when Gauri Kamat from St Cruz rode her scooter in a rash and negligent manner. When she reached near Shreyas Society at Alto-St Cruz, she dashed an oncoming scooterist who was proceeding from Bambolim to St Cruz," an Old Goa police official said.

The scooterist, Joseph D' Souza, from Tivim sustained grievous injuries. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to the Goa medical college and hospital, Bambolim, police said.
Motorcyclist dies in Arlem accident: A 36-year old Balli resident, Suresh Gaonkar, died after the motorcycle he was riding hit a truck near the Arlem junction on Thursday afternoon. Police sources said Gaonkar was on his way to work when the accident occurred. He died while being shifted to Goa medical college and hospital, Bambolim. Margao police have booked an offence against the truck driver.
Chinchinim resident booked for forgery: Margao town police on Thursday booked an offence against Nixon Vaz from Chinchinim for obtaining a loan from a bank by allegedly forging documents. Police sources said Vaz had taken a car loan for Rs 4.5 lakh from the Margao branch of a cooperative bank in 2009 but had failed to repay his loan installments. When the bank initiated recovery proceedings the forgery came to light. Acting on a complaint lodged by the bank manager, Margao police registered an offence against Vaz under IPC Section 420 (cheating). Further investigations are under way.
Educational scholarships for Margao students: To commemorate Children's Day, the Lions Club Service Trust distributed the second installment of the trust's education scholarships to 22 children from 13 Margao schools selected for financial assistance. The children selected for educational scholarships receive Rs 5,000 per academic year. The trust was able to increase the number of children selected for scholarships from 13 last year to 22 this year due to generosity expressed by donors.The function was held at the Lions Club Service Trust's senior citizen centre in Pedda-Margao. Lion Anthony Silveira, region chairperson, was chief guest. Trust chairman Lion Prakash Kamat welcomed those present and Lion Grace Kare spoke about the progress of the educational scholarships program. Trust secretary Lion Celso Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks.
