Thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds forecast across Goa till June 6

Panaji: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a five-day yellow alert for Goa, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across Goa as monsoon conditions intensify over the state.

According to the latest weather forecast, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thundershowers is likely to occur across Goa till at least June 6. The IMD has also cautioned that isolated places may experience thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph. No large change in temperatures is expected, however.

Goa continued to experience above-normal temperatures on Tuesday, with both Panaji and Mormugao recording maximum and minimum temperatures higher than the seasonal average, according to IMD.

At the Panaji observatory, the maximum temperature was 35.4°C, 2.4°C above normal, while the minimum was 28°C, 2.3°C above normal. Relative humidity was recorded at 70%, and no rainfall was reported till 5.30pm.

Similarly, the Mormugao observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 35.3°C, 2.8°C above normal, and a minimum of 28.2°C, 2.1°C above normal. Relative humidity was measured at 81%.

The IMD observations showed that conditions are favourable for further advance of the southwest monsoon into some parts of Kerala around June 4. The upper air cyclonic circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea off the south Kerala coast, extending up to 5.8km above mean sea level, tilting southwestward with height, persists. The upper air cyclonic circulation over south Kerala and adjoining Tamil Nadu extending up to 1.5 km above mean sea level merged with the above cyclonic circulation. The Southwest monsoon usually arrives at the Goa coast four to five days after its onset in Kerala.
