Margao: Social workers, activists, and citizens from across the state gathered outside the South Goa collectorate on Saturday, protesting the controversial electronic dance music festival, Sunburn, to be held in South Goa.
The protesters vowed to vehemently oppose the Sunburn festival for the well-being of the younger generation. According to them, the three-day event is frequented only by those who peddle and consume drugs.
Countering the argument of the hospitality industry that has welcomed the Sunburn festival in South Goa, citing economic benefits, the protesters suggested an alternative approach. The protestors said they could instead organise a Goan folk music and dance festival or invite other indigenous music troupes if boosting business was their concern.
“EDM festival is not Goan culture. We will strongly oppose it, not only in South Goa but anywhere in Goa,” a protester said. A resident of Raia demanded to know why Curtorim MLA Aleixo Lourenco has been silent on this even after much public outrage.
The organisers haven’t disclosed the venue for the Sunburn festival but speculations suggest the event could be held at the land acquired by the Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC).
