Study carrying capacity of Nuvem: Locals
Panaji: With the village seeing increased construction activity, the Nuvem gram sabha on Sunday demanded that the panchayat study the area’s carrying capacity.
Locals raised the ante against rising constructions, including illegal projects, and said the limited resources of power and water supply have been stressed with rise in constructions, especially residential buildings.
Zarina D’Cunha, a local, said people visiting Goa should enjoy their stay, and return to their respective states. “We do not have that high a carrying capacity,” she said.
Another local, Jose Andrade, said the problem has already been accentuated with water shortages in the village.
Many others also questioned the panchayat over this problem, and said that the time had come for the panchayat to assess resources before allowing more residential projects.
Sarpanch Freda D’Sa said the points raised by the villagers would be examined. Several questions about the issue of construction licences and water and electricity connections, were raised.
In recent months, similar demands were made in the gram sabhas of other village panchayats too.
