State sees sixth cholera death
Panaji: The toll from the cholera outbreak at Cutbona and Mobor jetties has increased to six, with the health services confirming that a migrant worker from Cutbona succumbed at South Goa district hospital. The 29-year-old patient was hospitalised on Oct 1 and he passed away on the same day, despite receiving treatment, said state epidemiologist Dr Utkarsh Betodkar.
“He was admitted with complaints of abdominal pain and loose motions, and it was observed by doctors that he was suffering from severe dehydration,” he said.
Prior to this incident, the outbreak at Cutbona and Mobor jetties had already claimed the lives of five migrant workers, two of whom were brought dead to the health facilities. Betodkar said that the health department is closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary measures to contain the spread of the disease and prevent further loss of life.
He said that although no new cholera cases have been reported in the last three days, a total of 228 cases involving trawler workers at Cutbona and Mobor jetties have been recorded as of Monday.
“Currently, no patients linked to the outbreak are admitted to any health facilities, but two patients are receiving treatment at their place of residence,” Betodkar said.
The state epidemiologist cautioned that the situation cannot be considered completely under control due to the ongoing rain and the continued influx of labourers at the two affected jetties. He said that sporadic cases may continue to occur in the coming days.
