PANAJI: State water resources minister Subhash Shirodkar on Thursday handed over a memorandum to Union minister for Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, objecting to the unilateral action of the Central Water Commission (CWC), which has recently granted its approval to Karnataka’s revised detailed project report (DPR) for the Kalasa water diversion project.
Goa’s contempt petition as well as special leave petition are pending before the Supreme Court.
Karnataka is trying to divert water from the Kalasa nullah, a tributary of Goa’s lifeline, the Mhadei. The Kalasa is already seen drying at its source at present.
Shirodkar opposed the technical clearance given by the Central Water Commission to Karnataka.
In his representation, he said that the Commission acted in a highhanded and biased manner and against natural justice.
“Knowing very well that the matter is subjudice before the Supreme Court and is being opposed by the state of Goa at all forums, the Central Water Commission, without the consent of Goa, in haste has issued technical clearance for the diversion of the Mhadei,” said Shirodkar.
He demanded that the said clearance be withdrawn immediately as the alleged diversion of the Mhadei will cause immense damage to the water security, salinity, ecology, and environment.
Shirodkar met Shekhawat at the first state minister’s conference on water vision, at Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
