‘Seaweed cultivation key to coastal growth’

Panaji: Multi-tier farming, integrated crop-livestock-fish systems, and seaweed cultivation hold strong potential as climate-resilient, high-value strategies to boost farmer incomes and strengthen coastal livelihoods, said Ashok Dalwai, chairman of the Karnataka agriculture price commission.

Dalwai was speaking at the ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Old Goa, on “Navigating the Blue Horizon: The Present and Future of Coastal Agriculture in India.”

Dalwai highlighted the importance of coastal agriculture as a key pillar of India’s blue economy. He said India’s coastlineoffers vast opportunities in fisheries, aquaculture, and integrated farming.

He said that integrated coastal area management should be adopted for sustainable development through improved planning and institutional coordination.
